Preface

Central department of mathematics (CDM) plans the following five year plan for its academic, administrative and physical improvement. It contributes to the university to become a center of excellence which is a goal of Tribhuvan University. CDM has credit for the beginning of the semester system in 2067 in general science stream which has been extended to many stream and programs of the university. A good implementation of the semester system demands improvement in academic, administrative and physical upgrade of the department so that the teaching and research could be well enhanced.

CDM has been conducting PhD program with about 19 scholars, 24 Mphil students and 140 Master’s students. I hope implementation of the proposed plan attracts more students towards research ad academic areas which ultimately contributes the nation and international academia.

1. Introduction

Central Department of Mathematics (CDM) is one of the oldest departments of Tribhuvan University (TU) and the oldest department in the history of science education at Tribhuvan University in Nepal. This department was established on September 20th, 1959, (Ashoj 4, 2016 (BS)) for the Master’s degree program in Mathematics. Now, CDM conducts PhD, MPhil (Master of Philosophy) and Master’s programs. At the beginning, CDM had faced the problem of lacking good faculties and physical infrastructure. So the department hired the teachers from neighboring country India and many professors from India contributed for the development of this department.  Enrolling only ten students and only four out of them, attempting the final exam in the first batch CDM started its journey, in the long run department taught two hundred plus students dividing into two shifts morning and day. From the starting, this department has good recognition around the world in delivering pure as well as (later) applied mathematics.

2.2.      Academic Activities

CDM is one of the pioneer departments of TU having following objectives:

·         To produce high level man power with MA/MSc, MPhil and PhD degree.

·         To conduct Post-Doctoral  research

·         To promote basic as well as applied mathematics

·         To promote and upgrade the mathematics curricula as required by national needs and to make compatible with international standard.

·         To start Bachelor in mathematics program in the central department for having the good quality of students in the Masters’ level.

 

 

CDM initiated semester system in master level under the leadership of the Prof. Gajendra Bahadur Thapa, in 2067 and then after TU inspired to launch the system on her constituent campuses as well as affiliated campuses, in masters’ level. Most of the students want to study MA/MSc on this department because of its good recognition in the university.

CDM is regularly revising syllabus and introducing new course according to the needs and international trend.  CDM introduced different computer programming courses in Master and Bachelor levels to make mathematics more understanding and applied.

 

2.2.   Research activities and Publications

CDM trying to promote research and teaching activities  conducting different seminars, workshops, conferences and running MPhil and PhD programs. 25 students are awarded by MPhil degree and 8 by PhD degree from this department. Now 19 students are doing PhD in different areas and 30 students are in MPhil program. CDM regularly publish peer reviewed journal named Nepal Mathematical Sciences Report.

 

2.3.   Students and Job Placement

The following chart shows the admission and passes record of the CDM since last six years. Admission rate is not consistent. In the early days of the semester system pass percentage is low but it is being improved. In the later years student enrollment is in decreasing. This is the serious problem for the department though most of the students get job easily in the market.

 

The graduates of this department get opportunities for higher studies and research in reputed institutes of different parts of the world, mostly in United States, Europe and Asia. Most of the graduates of this department are working in universities, campuses, higher secondary schools as teachers, government offices and other institutes of Nepal. Some of them are also involved in teaching and research at several academic institutions of developed countries. The graduates are not getting good access to industrial sectors yet. Department has no provision for job placement yet. But it has been necessary in the near future.

 

2.4.   Physical Infrastructure

Department has occupied a flat of a building with the central department of statistics  The flat consists of two class rooms, a seminar hall and few administrative rooms.  It consists of a library in a room, two rooms for computer lab, few rooms for the faculty. CDM is facing a shortage of classrooms and study rooms for the PhD scholars.  

 

2.5.   Financial Status

 

CDM gets regular budget from the TU central office for the current cost (salary of full time teaching and non-teaching staffs, repair and maintenance and purchase of teaching materials). The regular grant from the central office is inadequate for the recurring and the development works of the department. The other income source of student’s fee. The fee structure for the academic year 2076/077 is given as below:

3.       Collaboration

 

The CDM-TU and DMA-TUKL have established a DAAD supported partnership program in Optimization and Graph Theory. Furthermore, the CDM would like to propose for additional exchange problem in additional teaching/research areas between the CDM-TU and DMA-TUKL. With CIMPA collaboration department is conducting workshops on different areas. In 2014, 14 days’ workshop on “Aspects of Dynamical Systems” successfully organized and currently department is going to conduct workshop on “Dynamical Systems” form October 25-November 5, 2018. “Nepal Algebra Project” is a key program to produce manpower’s on Algebra initiated by Prof. Francisco Pappalardi, University of Roma Tre, Italy. It is focused for M. Phil. program.

This department is also has linkage with Embry riddle University, Florida USA, initiated by Prof. Harihar Khanal from the Embry riddle University. He worked as the full bright professor in this department in 2016.

CDM is working together with Nepal Mathematical Society since long time in different activities.

The Central Department of Mathematics aims to provide the highest level of education through continuous revision and expansion of academic programs in order to produce well-trained, competent, academic, veteran researchers and professional mathematicians.

1.      Develop in each student, critical thinking, enthusiasm, initiative and the necessary skills to become lifelong students of mathematics.

2.       Produce high level man power with MA/M.Sc., M. Phil. and PhD degree.

3.      Conduct Post-Doctoral  research

4.      Explore the importance and opportunity of mathematics in different field and   promote pure as well as applied mathematics 

5.      Promote and upgrade the mathematics curricula as required by national needs and to make compatible with international standard.

4.1.         Strengths

·         A well-established education institution for the  mathematics education and research

·         Enough land space for physical construction.

·          Affordable fee for general population of Nepal.

·         Well trained faculty team.

·         Government funding through Tribhuvan University Central Office.

·         Student’s Interest

 

4.2.         Weakness

·         CDM has a shared building only with lacks of class rooms and study rooms.

·         Teacher’s and research rooms are not available.

·         No library and laboratories facilities.

·         Inadequate teaching staffs.

·         No collaboration with the government, private sectors and industries.

·         Almost faculties are fully involved on teaching, research activities are negligible.

 

4.3.         Opportunities

·         CDM has opportunity to be a top level research center of Nepal in mathematics and interdisciplinary since it is the center of higher education of mathematics.

·         National and international institutions are willing to collaborate in teaching and research activities.

·         Students from different areas are willing to study mathematics.

·         TU authority and department team are positive to uplift the academic and research level of the department in different areas of mathematics.

·         Researchers and teaching faculties are highly demanded in the market.

 

4.4.         Threats

·         Volatile and unfriendly environment in the university.

·         No clear vision of the university to uplift the higher education and research.

·         No monitoring form the central office.

·         Central office does not allocate the budget for the research.

 

5.    Strategic Plan

CDM is very sensitive to its academic and infrastructure status. To uplift its academic and research level, CDM has the plan to work on the two titles: Academic and Physical infrastructure.
